Elements of Printmaking: Woodcut and Relief
Instructor: Robert Sebanc
Time: Fridays, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

This six week course is designed to familiarize students with the basic principles and concepts of woodcut and relief printmaking processes.

Students will be introduced to linoleum, wood and alternative substrates progressing to more advanced additive, reductive, multiple plate and color methods of printing. Students will learn to edition prints as well as
explore experimentation. Critical evaluation and aesthetic understanding of artwork produced will play as equally a role as printing ability.

Woodcut and Relief is a printing process in which the impression is created by the uncarved areas or the unprepared surface of the printing element, which has been inked with a roller, brayer, or other tool. The cut, or incised, areas do not usually print, since they are recessed and are rarely inked. Nonetheless, during a run paper is often pushed into these sunken areas, creating an embossed effect. The recessed areas do print when the printing element is inked in the same manner as an etching plate, with the surface wiped dean, leaving ink in the recesses. Woodcut and linocut are usually used for relief
printing.

Course begins at 6 p.m., Friday, April 20 - six weeks - $60 for the course
